HBBC Dementia Support Team

What is dementia? – Dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life. Many diseases can cause abnormal brain changes. This damage interferes with the ability of brain cells to communicate with each other. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60-80% of cases. Vascular dementia, which occurs because of microscopic bleeding and blood vessel blockage in the brain, is the second most common cause of dementia, and the two can occur simultaneously and are referred to as mixed dementia.

The HBBC dementia support team provides support to carers and their network through a variety of avenues, including a social get-together on the first Wednesday of the month at The Pier Village Café at 10 am, a support group at the church on the third Thursday of the month at 9.30 am. They facilitate a short program throughout the year addressing issues around grief, loss, and dementia.  These opportunities are designed to enhance the carer's well-being by providing information, education, and a safe, confidential environment to discuss their situation and assist each other.

If you have concerns about someone you know, it is best to consult your GP initially, as the person may not have any insight into any deficits they may be exhibiting. As a Registered Nurse, I have 30 years of experience working in aged care with the Aged Care Assessment Team and the Dementia Outreach Service in community and residential facilities. I would be happy to provide information and assist you in navigating your journey.

Research suggests that being active, eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, and maintaining normal blood pressure and blood sugar levels may lower the chances of developing dementia.

You can access a flyer with contact details in the church foyer.
