During Jesus’ trial before the high priest, he was asked to explain his teaching. His answer was to ask the people themselves what they heard. It struck me that the mission of speaking up for Jesus began right then. Jesus entrusted his message to those who were eyewitnesses to his life and his teaching. Those eyewitnesses were faithful in spreading this teaching and preserving it in writings that we have today. But the mission did not stop with the eyewitnesses. Jesus knew that this message of the kingdom would grow and expand to the ends of the earth.

We carry on this same witness today. We are responsible to tell others about the words of Jesus. Our role is not to recruit people into a movement or religion. Our role is to keep alive the message of Jesus so that people will have a chance to know him and come to believe in him. Jesus is still relying on faithful witnesses to tell others what they themselves have come to know.
