Wise Counsel

"This is not good!" Moses' father-in-law exclaimed. "You're going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself.
Exodus 18:17-18
When we think of Moses, we often think of a man who was close to God, guided and empowered by God, with a specific mission calling. And yet, in this story of Moses in Exodus 18 we can see that Moses did not always make wise choices. Even though he was close to God and God spoke to him often, his approach to leadership was totally inadequate. It took his father-in-law, Jethro, to see this and to speak up.

What I learn from this story is that God’s guidance does not come only in one way. Just because it is not spectacular, or not a direct verse from the Bible, does not mean God is not leading you. Sometimes God guides us simply by the wise counsel of those who see things differently, who may be more experienced, who have a godly insight into our lives. I feel sad when I encounter people who refuse to listen, claiming that they are guided by God alone. Without the balance of wise counsel, these people will often go astray and make poor choices. The wise counsel from a trusted mentor will often be one of the many methods God uses to guide us into his will. Those who listen to the wisdom of others will be better balanced in their walk with God.

God bless you and your family
