‘It's not over until it's over’ is a well known saying which is very true in the realm of discipleship. You can never say that you have ‘arrived’. You may be a mature Christian, but there is always something more that you can grow in. At first, God targets behaviour. Then God puts his finger on our thought life. Finally, the Holy Spirit challenges our motives. This is a life long journey. Though the apostle Paul was nearing the end of his life, his attitude was to keep serving, keep loving, keep ministering for Christ. This is the attitude of a servant who works continually and faithfully until called home by their master. It is a great thing to look forward to that day when the Lord will embrace us and say “Well done faithful servant, enter into your reward.” But until then, we press on as servants who can be trusted, who will not give up in their service for the kingdom.
