White Family Trip to Nepal

The White family travelled to Nepal for two weeks in May to assist in several local community volunteer projects. The projects were a joint effort between the Rotary clubs of Hervey Bay Sunrise and Dhulikhel, Nepal, and the private charity foundation “Power of Passion.” The projects included assisting in building a new school classroom in the Janasiddha basic school, which is part of the Harpan village district outside the city of Pokhara, as well as a dental camp and the “Days for Girls” program promoting Women’s Health.

Nick connected with four other local Nepalese Dentists from Dhulikhel Community Dental Hospital with the help of Rotary Dhulikhel to provide a three-day intensive camp. The camp was enabled by the fundraising efforts of Rotary Sunrise Hervey Bay and the “Tooth Fairy” dinner held at Enzo’s, organised by Power for Passion. Mobile dental units and chairs were set up on the dental camp in one of the school classrooms to provide emergency and general dental care. Over the three days, around 100 patients were seen daily, treating students from the school and surrounding village.

Emilie and the girls were able to help tradespeople in the building; they had several activities with the school children to foster friendship and goodwill, such as arts and crafts, sports and dance. One of the female dentists took time away from the camp to help with translation and facilitated Emilie, Bea, and Carla Olsen in information for the Days for Girls program, distributing and demonstrating hygiene packs and family planning.
Camping on the school grounds for three days was followed by a short reset in the city of Pokhara before a 4-day trek of the Poon Hill circuit. Over the four days, we ascended from 1400m to 3100m for 42 km with some stunning local scenery and visions of the Himalayan mountains of Annapurna and Machapuchhare.

Monsoon rains, thunderstorms, cold, heat, wet clothes, leeches, tummy viruses, asthma attacks and sore muscles were just some of the challenges presented to us trekking in the Himalayas. We were inspired by God's creation's “lofty mountain grandeur” and Nepal's humble and beautiful people. We continue to learn how God has a special place for these people and pray that generosity, care and active interest in them will build relationships and goodwill as inroads into sharing God’s plan for them and how they can come to know Him for eternity.
