It is a privilege to be part of God’s plan to provide mentors to the students at Carinity Education Glendyne. Various elements converged, prayers were answered, people came on board and resources were made available to commence this new outreach.

Youth COACH Mentoring is a new initiative funded by Carinity and HBBC to provide trained volunteer mentors to support students who need additional help developing their strengths, building their confidence and setting goals.

COACH stands for Creating Opportunities and Casting Hope and offers Youth and Family Mentoring in over 180 locations around Australia, New Zealand and in the UK. The program has been designed by social workers and evaluated by Monash University as a successful relationship-based model for growth and development.

HBBC also offers Family COACH Mentoring to families doing life tough. The Family COACH Mentoring has been running successfully for 5 years here in the Hervey Bay and Maryborough area partnering with local agencies such as Bay Families, ACT for Kids and Catholic Early Childhood Centres.

Over 50 families have benefited from the kindness of volunteer mentors who have freely invested time in supporting families doing life tough.

At Carinity Education Glendyne students who request a mentor will be allocated a suitable volunteer mentor who will spend 1 hour per week during school time for 12 months. The sessions will be arranged in consultation with teachers and the Well-being staff and take place only on the school premises unless special circumstances have been authorized by the school and the parents notified.

The mentors come from diverse backgrounds with genuine lived experience and must be of good character. All are required to be trained, have Blue Cards and be registered as volunteers at the school. They are to be role models and always provide a safe space for the students. Sessions may involve talking and listening, playing games, doing an activity, helping with homework, study etc.

We look forward to being able to complement the exceptional work being done by the staff at Carinity Education Glendyne. Our long-term goal is to provide Youth COACH Mentors for other High Schools in the area and discussions are already underway to work towards this in 2026.
