He Leaves the 99

In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven't strayed away!
Luke 15:7
Luke 15:7
As it is Mother’s Day this weekend, I will reflect on an experience most parents will identify with.
On one occasion when my children were small, I lost one of them in a shopping centre carpark. We had 5 children at the time, and he was number 4. Suddenly, he became the priority. I was driven by one thought, “I have to find him.” All my energy, mixed with a little ‘fear of the worst’, drove me for the following minutes until he was found. No parent would say “Oh well, it doesn’t matter, I have 4 more children," nor does God think that way either. We, as Christians, need to realise that God does not only love us, but His heart is also for the lost.
Jesus is not saying that God doesn’t care about the people in church. What He is saying is that it deeply concerns Him about the ones who are outside the church. When God’s children are lost, He seeks to save them, as any good parent would.
The call of this chapter in Luke is to understand that there are still more lost souls to find. It would be wrong to spend all our efforts on those who are inside the church. We must also seek to save those who are lost. That is God’s heart.
