Wait for the Spirit

"And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as My Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven."
Luke 24:49

The disciples did not become witnesses to Jesus straight away. They were told to wait in Jerusalem until they were filled with the Holy Spirit.

It's not that the disciples did nothing at all. We learn from the book of Acts that there were about 120 of them. We know that they met together for prayer. We know they even made a decision to replace Judas and appoint Matthias as the official 12th disciple. They probably did what any other group of worshippers did.

Yet, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon them, their activities had no real eternal power. It was not until the Holy Spirit came upon them that they began to see outcomes that were clearly beyond their human abilities.

The story of Pentecost is a reminder that we are not called to a religion that lacks power, but that every believer is born again by the Spirit of God to do the miraculous work of God.

Simply put, when we do ministry in Jesus’ name, the outcomes will be much greater than what we could achieve without Him. This is the work of the Spirit in us.
