Thomas' Story: From Bondage to Freedom

As Associate Pastor at HBBC, James brings a wealth of experience in counselling—a vital skill when combined with the Pastoral Care ministry. James is a wonderful blessing to our church family, especially for those who are finding their feet in the Kingdom of God. His presence and wisdom are making a meaningful difference in the lives of many.
In the coming weeks, our Grateful Living section will feature two powerful and deeply moving stories that illustrate the life-changing impact of this ministry. You won’t want to miss them.
Thomas’ Story – From Bondage to Freedom
Thomas is a devoted family man who was recently referred to our Pastoral Care team by a GP within our church community. Raised in a Mormon household, Thomas always had a knowledge of God and His love. But it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that he came to a life-changing realisation: the central truth of the cross and the saving grace found in Jesus Christ. That moment marked the beginning of his new life in Christ.
Our first conversations were over the phone, during which we discussed the key differences between Mormonism and Christianity. It was clear even then—Thomas had a deep hunger to know Jesus more and was passionate about what Christ had done for him.
Recently, Thomas and his wife reached out again, burdened by concerns that spiritual influences from his past might still be affecting him. Though he was on fire for Jesus, they felt he was battling spiritual strongholds that were impacting his thoughts and behaviours. Together, we arranged a time to complete a deliverance from these struggles and seek freedom in Jesus’ name.
The time of prayer and deliverance was intense, lasting over an hour. When it ended, Thomas was physically and emotionally exhausted—but deeply relieved. A heavy burden had been lifted.
Two weeks later, during a follow-up call, Thomas shared with joy that the intrusive thoughts he’d battled—both self-harming and violent to others—were completely gone. His desire to view pornography had drastically diminished, and he had even taken the step of deleting all his social media accounts to protect his mind and spirit.
Thomas is now walking in renewed freedom. He knows temptations may still come—such is the human condition—but he clings to the truth of 2 Corinthians 5:17:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
Praise God for the transformation He brings!
