"...my God is my rock in whom I take refuge.."

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
    my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
    my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm 18:2
Read Psalm 18

In my current season of bible reading I am going through a Chronological bible which has been a wonderful way to read the scriptures to give a different perspective.

For example, I have just finished reading 1 Samuel.  This focuses on the story of David growing up under Saul's kingship, and how, for years, Saul pursues David to kill him. David has multiple chances to kill Saul, but chooses not to, because he believed God would dethrone Saul, not him.

Throughout 1 Samuel, David wrote many Psalms.  Every now and then, the story of 1 Samuel will stop, and a Psalm will begin, as they believed the Psalm lined up with when David wrote it.

As 1 Samuel finished, Psalm 18 is there. David wrote this Psalm right after Saul was killed. David was saddened by Saul's death, but he was also relieved and gave glory to God as his provider and protector. The first 2 verses say: "I love you Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer, my God is my rock in whom I take refuge. My shield and my horn of my salvation, my stronghold."

Each of us have gone through tough times. Perhaps not fleeing for our lives like David, but tough times indeed for other things. This is why the Psalms are so relatable for us in our times of distress. Perhaps you are going through a tough time in this season of life. Like David, he sometimes felt like there was no way out, was extremely hurt and rejected, even though he did nothing wrong. There was a strong injustice there for him. YET, he always gave God glory and trusted in His provision and care.

Are you trusting God with your tough time? Have you surrendered and/or confessed what's been happening like David did? Sometimes these roads of life are rough and long. David, being on the run, was anywhere between 7-10 years before Saul was killed. That's a long time to wait but he never gave up hope. Neither should we.

God bless you as you seek Him.

Your brother in Christ,
James
