Restoring Dignity, Opening Doors

Imagine missing school every month because you don’t have access to basic hygiene supplies....
For thousands of girls around the world, this is reality. Days for Girls is changing that story—and right here in Hervey Bay, volunteers are helping lead the way.
In 2017, Deb Butters and Kym Robinson discovered Days for Girls and recognised the value of these sustainable hygiene kits for the Anguganak Healthy Motherhood Project in PNG. They joined the newly formed Hervey Bay chapter and have been stitching hope ever since.
Since then, the team has created and sent over 6,000 kits to women and girls in PNG, Vietnam, Fiji, Cambodia, and refugee camps. Each colourful, carefully made kit lasts up to three years, giving girls the freedom to stay in school and pursue their future with confidence.
The impact is powerful.
In Anguganak, girls have delivered handwritten letters requesting kits so their classmates wouldn’t have to miss school. On another occasion, two sisters arrived with their younger sibling, asking for a kit so she would be prepared when her first period began. These simple requests reflect the life-changing impact of these kits.
Here in Hervey Bay, the work also builds community. Most of the sewing team are women aged 60–80 who love the sense of purpose, fun, and friendship that comes from gathering to create something meaningful. As Deb says, “Purpose in life is important, and our team finds a satisfying sense of usefulness, doing something worthwhile while socialising and having fun.”
Want to be part of something that restores dignity and changes futures?
The team hopes to expand with additional sewing days and would love to welcome new volunteers to help reach even more women and girls worldwide.
