Jesus the Stairway

And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
John 1:51
It is not a usual picture we have of Jesus—one of a stairway. Here, Jesus speaks as the link between heaven and earth. He paints a picture of angels ascending and descending on him.

There are other images in Scripture that describe Jesus in this way:
• Jesus as our advocate (1 John 2:1)
• Jesus as our mediator (1 Timothy 2:5)
• Jesus as the way to the Father (John 14:6)
We also see concepts such as Jesus being the way, the gate, and the door. He is our connection.

This reminds me of another story in the Bible—the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11)—where the people tried to build a tower to reach God. In response, God scattered them. Human attempts to reach God will always fall short, but by his grace, God has provided a true connection through Jesus. And just as the Tower of Babel scattered the nations and languages, Jesus brings them back together in the gospel. Only God holds the answers to our searching, our longing, and our purpose.

We have walked through the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), one of the great examples of Jesus’ teaching. But along the way, we must make sure we put into practice what we have heard. Only then can we truly call him Lord.
