Conditional Devotion

“I tell you the truth. You want to be with me because I fed you ….”
John 6:26
Do I have a self-centred devotion?

In our modern world, our devotion seems to have conditions. “If I give my all to this, what is in it for me?” This is conditional devotion. It is unreliable because the moment we feel that the cost/benefit is out of balance then we withdraw.

Unfortunately, this attitude so often can be seen in the church as well. Many will follow Jesus only as long as they are getting something from it. It is sickeningly self-centred. The call to follow Jesus is a call to devote ourselves to Him in the same way He devoted Himself to us. Jesus gave up everything for our salvation. Not to mention that we owe to God our very life. Everything is His.

True followers will follow Jesus not for what they get but because of who He is. He is the Creator, Sustainer, Provider, Saviour, Lord. He is worth our full, unconditional devotion.
