The First Christmas

… the angel said,
"Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife.
For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit."
Matthew 1:20
It is interesting to note the contrast between the first Christmas, and our modern culture of Christmas time. Whilst we enjoy the holidays, the anticipation of Christmas day, the giving and receiving of gifts and the warmth of the community atmosphere around us, it was not the same for Mary and Joseph. Consider the facts, Mary was pregnant before their marriage. Joseph had assumed the worst. An angel visited him in a dream to explain what was happening. And then there was the awkwardness of the birth itself. Away from home, and in less than ideal surroundings. What has become for us a time of joy, peace, and warm sentiment, had its origins in shame, fear, and discomfort. Little did Mary and Joseph realize at the time how impactful this event would be on the entire world.

It is a reminder to us that the blessings of God are not always measured by the peace and comfort of circumstances around us but by God’s intent through those circumstances. What might appear uncomfortable to us, can be the catalyst for God’s amazing work. And so, just as Mary and Joseph showed trust, so should we.
