COACH Youth Mentoring

Youth Mentoring has had a boost in Hervey Bay with the start up in 2025 of COACH Youth Mentoring, a program run by not-for-profit organisation, Kindness Works.

This program has been rolled out all over Australia and takes trained volunteer mentors and matches them to young people in schools who could use a listening ear and a caring mentor to help them navigate life's ups and downs.

Kindness Works was able to commence the training with the support of the Fraser Coast Council Mayor's Community Benefit Fund, a grant of $2,200 to purchase enough training books for the first three years of training more than 40 volunteers in mentoring. We’re thankful for this support from Mayor George Seymour.

“It’s been amazing to see 20+ people attend mentor training in 2025 and 15 of those begin mentoring or ready for mentoring,” says Pastor James, who oversees the COACH work. “We are also very thankful for the 3-year grant from Carinity (the Social Support service of Qld Baptists) that is enabling us to employ our part-time Coordinator and other aspects of running this program, along with the support of Hervey Bay Baptist Church.”

James recently met with Carinity Education (Glendyne) Principal, Brian, and Gail, our COACH Youth mentoring contact at the school.

Gail shared the excitement from herself and staff for the continuation of COACH mentoring again in 2026. Results from the mentoring have seen participating students grow in confidence, excited for their mentor catchups, sharing their enjoyment of these sessions and commencing positions of leadership in the school due to the mentoring they had received.
