Honouring Women

One of them was Lydia from Thyatira,
a merchant of expensive purple cloth, who worshiped God.
As she listened to us, the Lord opened her heart, and she accepted what Paul was saying.

This week we celebrate Mothers’ Day.

It is a chance to focus on and elevate the important role that mothers play. We should never underestimate how costly but how important it is for a woman to carry a child, give birth, then raise the child into a functioning adult. It is one of the highest callings.

One of the things that is easy to notice in God’s word is how prominent women are in the movement of God. Some religions squash women. Even Christianity has had times throughout its history where women have been greatly underestimated in their ministry. But in the Bible, many are honoured. Lydia, for example, was the first convert at Philippi. Her home became the centre of ministry for Paul and Silas. But Lydia is not the only ‘first one’ in the story of God. It was the women who first discovered that Jesus had risen. Other heroes such as Jael, Deborah, Ruth, and Mary, are all examples of how God honours them through his salvation story.

May all women, and especially mothers this Sunday, know how valuable they are to God and to us.
