Pentecost

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:8
This week we celebrate Pentecost. Pentecost began as a Jewish festival in the Old Covenant. It is set 50 days after the beginning of the Passover festival, and also called ‘feast of weeks.’ It marked the beginning of the Barely harvest.

For Christians it is the celebration of the day the Holy Spirit came upon the believers for the first time, signaling the beginning of the new covenant and the birth of the church.

I think it is another example of God’s prophetic use of the Old Covenant that the original Pentecost celebrated a physical harvest, reflecting the spiritual harvest through the church that has continued to today.

As we witness for Christ in our lives, wherever we are, whatever we are doing, the Holy Spirit brings a harvest of souls. This was the work of God at the beginning and remains the work of God. It is a great honour for us to join Him in this work and be significant as workers of the harvest. Let us celebrate this harvest with our Christian brothers and sisters across the city this Sunday night.
