Godly Solitude

Before daybreak the next morning,
Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray………
But Jesus replied, "We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came."
Mark 1:35,38

Mark 1 captures the story of amazing miracles. Jesus spent the whole day healing in Capernaum, the Mark describes the whole town coming out to observe. There is no greater description of revival than this. And yet Jesus left it all behind to go on to other towns. Why did he not stay and enjoy the revival. There were many more needs. He could have really established himself.
But early in the morning, during a time of godly solitude, Jesus found clarity. He often went away on his own to spend time with the Father. This is a discipline that far too many Christians overlook.
At the core of our being we are social creatures. God designed us this way. We really do need each other and we are much stronger in community than we are alone. Loneliness is a real problem for many. Solitary confinement is the worst punishment. And yet there is a godly solitude. The spiritual discipline of solitude is not as much a ‘getting away from people’ as it is a quiet time without distraction where we can spent time with God. This is where we gain clarity.
When was the last time you were by yourself for an extended period of time, where your purpose was to pray and spend time with God. I want to encourage you to plan such a time and walk in the footsteps of Jesus.
