Jesus tells a number of parables where stewards have been entrusted with responsibility and then rewarded, or punished, according to their faithfulness. It is a sober reminder that we as followers of Jesus have all been given a trust.

In the first instance, God trusts us with spiritual gifts. The Bible asserts that we each have been given something from the Holy Spirit that allows us to serve (Romans 12:6, 1 Corinthians 12:7). We must be faithful in using these gifts to build up the kingdom of God.

But there is another gift as well. We carry a treasure of knowledge. It is the knowledge of how to gain eternal life through the Lord Jesus. We dare not lock this treasure away but be faithful with it. It is a great honour to think that our witness could lead someone to eternal life. But it is also a sobering reality to imagine that someone could be lost to eternity because we stayed quiet.

“Those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” Do not let your faith dissolve into some kind of spectator sport. But rise up and use what God has given to you to honour him.
