Ransomed
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve,
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus takes the word ‘ransom’ from the military context of prisoner exchange.
In war, one army could release the prisoners in exchange for their own soldiers being returned. This is what Jesus’ sacrifice was able to do. Spiritually speaking we were all captives. We were held prisoner by our own sin, by our own desires, by the law, by Satan, by the world. God pays a price, the death of His own Son, to release us from this captivity.
Because of what Jesus has done, we can be released from bondage to worship God freely with a clear conscience.
The purpose of Jesus coming was not just to teach morals or to set a good example. He came to save. We will never be able to truly understand Jesus as teacher until we understand him as Saviour.
It is by His ransom that we have access to God. It is by His work that we are saved. It is by His resurrection that we can have the hope of salvation. This is a most beautiful gift. We worship, we serve, we follow because Jesus has made a way for us to do that.
May we truly know this gospel.
