Celebrating our Deaf Community
By Margie Laviano
Thank you for the opportunity to share how God has been at work over the weekends of the CWCI conference and then at Pastor Brett’s Induction.
The theme of the conference, held at Tamborine Mountain, was “Complete in Christ - A closer look at Colossians". This year Gwen and Janice were joined by Charlene and Rose from our church. We were greatly encouraged by Paul’s letter to the Colossians, bringing us back to our understanding of Christ’s deity, our foundations of faith, our salvation, and how to live our lives as God’s children/family.
It truly felt like family over the weekend as women shared together in fellowship. Each year the CWCI committee seek to make the weekend accessible to Deaf ladies by organising interpreters.
Rachael (interpreter and organiser of Deaf KYB group) linked Gwen, Janice and Charlene with other Deaf women in Perth and Maryborough who have been studying the book of Ruth together each Sunday evening. The picture of the woman seeing an old friend captures the joy of this experience.
It truly is a beautiful thing when God’s people of different languages and backgrounds gather together and worship together as one family united through Christ. When this happens - God is at work!!
I have also added some photos of Deaf brothers and sisters who visited our church - Suzanne & Gary, and Des and Leanne from Brisbane. They were returning from a gathering of Deaf people in Yeppoon. Again for me this is God’s family gathering and God working as His people join together to praise and worship Jesus. I was quite moved when Gary said to me, “ I do not know your church family and I do not know your new pastor, but in my spirit, I believe he is the right person for your church”.

Our church thank you Margie, for the beautiful way you sign for our sisters Gwen and Janice and anyone else who arrives in our midst in need of an Auslan interpreter. You are a generous, cheerful and gracious lady.
