Hold Tomorrow Loosely

How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it's here a little while, then it's gone.
James 4:14
James 4:14
In encouraging us to live one day at a time, Jesus is not dissuading us from planning. In fact,
wise people will consider the future and plan for it. What Jesus is urging us to do is not be
consumed by tomorrow. In the passage quoted here, James says the same thing.
James challenges us about our assumptions. Unwise people will make assumptions that everything will be the same as it is now and can so easily fall into goals and commitments that they will not be able to manage. Assuming that we will always have the same resources, the same opportunities, the same health levels, the same community standards can lead us to become inflexible and fail to pay attention to the subtle changes around us.
It is good to have plans and goals but we should hold them lightly, with loose fingers, then if things should change, it will hurt less to let go of them. James goes on to say “What you ought to say is ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that …’” Never invest too much of your heart in what you do not know. Live the day you are in and trust God with the rest.
God bless you and your family
