Set Apart

If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honourable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.
2 Timothy 2:21
The idea of God’s people being ‘set apart’ is a common theme in the Bible. On many occasions the Bible describes certain leaders as being chosen to be set apart for a particular purpose. David, Daniel and Paul come immediately to mind. But Peter also describes all believers as holy and set apart (1 Pet 2:9). Being holy and set apart for special use is an honourable concept. It means that God values you. He has a special plan for you, and you are important to Him.

We may read this verse and think straight away of moral purity. In other words, for God to use us we need to be good. We need to avoid the behaviours that would bring shame to the gospel. And that would be correct. It is consistent with the context of this verse.

But the idea of being set apart goes way beyond just behaviour. It is about heart attitude. It is saying to God that “I am available for whatever you want me to do.” The position of honour is not reserved for those who merely take pride in their own virtuous life, but for those who simply wish to be used by God.

If you devote your life wholeheartedly to his purpose, then you will be clean and useful.

God bless you and your family
