Our Stories

Calming the Storm

Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion.
The disciples woke him up, shouting,
“Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”
When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves,

“Silence! Be still!”
Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.
Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
Mark 4:38 - 40

I had heard and read the story many times. Jesus calming the storm. It was often in Sunday School lessons growing up and was quite a familiar story.
Why would the disciples be so scared when they had the Son of God in the boat with them?
How could Jesus really sleep through all that commotion?
But now it was my turn. 2000+ years later.
How did I come to be in the same position as those disciples?
But then.....God!

I haven't mastered the art of journaling, but am consistent in reading my bible and asking God to use His word to teach, correct, rebuke & train me (2 Tim 3:16).
How easy it is though, to become overwhelmed by our circumstances and the world around us.

It's the early hours of the morning, and unable to sleep, I open the word to Mark 4 and read the calming of the storm. This morning though, I truly relate to these disciples and the Lord hears my cry - "Jesus, don't you care that I'm going to drown?"! The answer is prompt and clear - “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” It's not a harsh word, it's gentle and caring.
Yes there is a storm raging around you. It's true. But where is your trust?
Repentance.
Oh Lord. How did I let it get to this?
I am so sorry!
I have taken my eyes off you.
You have all things in Your hand! You are sovereign!
Worship!
Peace!
Blessed are You Lord!
