What Has The Crowd Got To Do With It?

“If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers.”
Luke 19:40
Luke 19:40
The story of the triumphal entry is, in part, a story of the fickleness of the crowd. On Palm Sunday, Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey, thus fulfilling one of the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah. People were excited. The Messiah was here. Deliverance is at hand. They spread coats and palm branches on the road ahead of him and chanted together, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
And yet, this same crowd, the very same people who praised him as Messiah, within a week are shouting out with one voice “Crucify Him.” Such is the unfaithfulness of the human heart.
My point is that Jesus doesn’t need the crowds to affirm him. He said, ‘even the rocks will cry out’. What is true in heaven remains true on Earth, even if people don’t accept it. We should not be distressed if the world rejects the Lord. Regardless of whether the church is valued in our society or not, Jesus is still the Lord. The gospel is still relevant. And we are saved.
