Our Stories

School Chaplaincy in the Wide Bay Area

Last week a teacher called my office and requested a pair of shoes for a student whose shoes were so small she had blisters and could barely walk. Unfortunately, I did not have a pair that fitted her. However, I went off to the op shop and was able to purchase several pairs of shoes.  I then went to Big W and bought some socks.  By the end of the week I had one pair of shoes and one pair of socks left. Another child had since come to me with their shoes duck taped together. This family was in financial need.

Not only that, the same family of the student with blisters – four children- had come to school not having had breakfast. In their lunch bag was a muesli bar and the one boy had a carrot. This was their food for the whole day. I was able to provide breakfast, fruit for fruit break and a sandwich for lunch.
Last year I was able to take this student to the optometrist to get glasses as she was struggling with schoolwork due to poor vision. (I was able to get funding for the glasses, but all other purchases come from my own pocket.)

I could go on, but I think you now see the need. Not only do we as chaplains provide practical support, but also social, emotional, spiritual, and family support. (And people think we don’t need chappies?)

If you would like to find out more, help in any way or become a Chaplain call Miriam on 0413 162 848, Carmen on 0473 494 082 or Scripture Union on 1300 478 753. We would love to hear from you.

God Bless
