Devotional
Devoted

'They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.'
Acts 2:42
Acts 2:42
This well known verse in the opening chapters of Acts gives us a precious insight as to what was most important for the early Christians. It must have been an exciting era for the church as the believers witnessed the supernatural power of God as well as miraculous expansion of converts. We learn here that what was most important for the believers was growing in their knowledge of the truth, being together, worshipping and prayer. Not much has really changed in terms of the priorities of the church. Teaching, fellowship, worship and prayer continues to be the staple experience of most churches.
But one phrase we should not overlook in this verse is, “They devoted themselves….” They did not just pay lip service to these things. They were devoted to them. The ministry of the church became their highest priority. Would you describe yourself in these terms? Are you devoted? There is nothing of individualism here in the early church. It was about family, about teamwork, about unity, and a story of ordinary people joining together with one heart and one priority. And so God worked wonders among them. May we continue in that legacy.
God bless you and your family
