Grateful Living

By David Harrison
My wife, Lorrie, and I were married for 65 years on November 30, 2023. We thank God for allowing us to serve Him in various ways during that time.
Lorrie passed away in 2023 after years of suffering from medication overuse (anti-anxiety drugs causing depression), mobility issues, and Alzheimer’s disease. It became necessary for me to become Lorrie’s full-time carer for the last 26 years of her life. I am grateful to God for His promise to “never forsake me” and “never give me trials greater than I could bear”.
I took an early retirement and began the six-year journey to heal Lorrie from the drugs she had been addicted to. We joined a drug rehabilitation group and discovered many other people were on the same journey as Lorrie and me. A significant portion had separated in their relationships. My national service training taught me basic medical training. God doesn’t waste experiences. During this journey, I learned essential ways to remain focused and useful. These were practical things like editing videos and home Bible studies—all things I could do from home to keep my mental attitude sound.
We always sought to live by the principle of “Whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord.”
I am grateful to God for leading us to Hervey Bay, a Retirement Village with a Residential Care Unit on campus and for making a place available in that unit when Lorrie needed it. I am also grateful to Him for leading me to this church and for its blessings.
It's not about my strength; with His help, the "way of escape" is Him. Otherwise, I could never endure it (Based on 1 Corinthians 15:10).
David and Lorrie have four children who believe in Jesus as their Saviour. They have served in many different church roles, and David continues to serve here at HBBC wherever he can.
